Geminds
The 2024 Geminids were badly affected by weather in much of the country. The video networks picked up 1700 confirmed meteors including one very bright fireball off the east coast of Scotland (see below), but there were no member reports and even the International Meteor Organization only received reports of six bright events in the whole of December. The southern UK seems to have been largely clouded out. In lieu of members’ reports I have created a collage of some of the best images from the video networks.
Minor Showers
Again poor weather seems to have washed out most of the minor showers. Tom Banks managed a single photo of an Ursid but the weather was too poor for a proper watch.
Fireball reports
SPA members reported four fireballs to the International Meteor Network in December. One of those reported by SPA members via the IMO was on the evening of the 1st of December over the border between Scotland and England. This event reached magnitude -6.
In addition, I received reports of two other fireballs, on the 12th of December with a visual magnitude of at least -6 off the east coast of Scotland and over South Wales on the 26th, reaching visual magnitude -5.7.
