Aurora

2015 to 2016

On the 7th October 2015 a cornal hole mixed with a CIR impacted the Earth causing aurora as far south as southern England and active for 3 days.

This spectacular shot was taken by Mary Spicer in Tackley, Oxfordshire on the 7/8 October 2015. Not only the aurora, but a meteor as well.

This display was also seen by Roy Watson from his home in Kirkintilloch, just outside of Glasgow, who indicated he saw a display to 50degrees in height and very lively.

On the 19th Dec 2015 a CME struck Earth at 1500UT. Although at first nothing much was seen, by the 20/21 the field had swung negitive, giving auroras as far south as London.

A nice welcome to the New Year was the arrival of a CME and a strong negitive field. This created aurora displays that were picked up as far south as southern England.

NLC 2015

The season has started with a nice display over Scotland and it promises to be a good one.

On the 17/18 March 2015, a CME struck the Earth at 04.30. By the time it got dark, the field had swung negitive and the display was visible as far south as northern France, although many on the east coast (including myself) were fogged out.

NLC 2014

The season has got off to a steady start. After seeing wisps over the Arctic on the 24 May, it has started to enlarge and spread south. My first report is from Alan Clitherow, but at 36,000 ft, he has a slight advantage.

On July 6/7 the UK had mostly clear skies, and a massive sheet of NLC was visible over most of the country.

Caught this little belt on the 5/6 Aug 2014 at 2230UT from my croft in Glenbarry, Banffshire.

Aurora reports for 2014

Despite the sun being at the high point in its cycle, aurora are few & far between, with most sightings confined to northern Scotland.

_________________________________________________________________________________ Simon Kidd caght this display from the sea front at Reykjavik, Iceland on the 24/25 Feb. ________________________________________________________________________________________ The Great Storm  On the 27th February at 1600UT a coronal mass ejection hit Earth, causing wide spread active aurora visible as far south as northern France. The display was visible from 19.30 on and it was still reaching 25dg high at 0300 on the 28th, when I gave in.                                                                 ———–

August to December 2011

It has been a quiet start to the 11/12 season, with bad weather playing its part in blocking many observations.

This shot by Alan Tough opened the season, taken on the 5/6 August 2011 from Elgin, Scotland.
