The Mira type variable R Serpentis is now readily visible in binoculars as it closes in on its 2015 maximum.
Observations from late June placed it around mag 7.0. Maximum is expected to occur late this month. It is never possible to precisely predict the date of maximum or the peak brightness in advance, but given that the average peak of R Ser is mag 6.9, the chances look very good that this will be exceeded in the course of July.
