Solar Highlights for November 22

Many thanks to members who sent in observations. The Sun is getting quite low in the sky and bad weather is occurring on a regular basis as we approach winter. However, the start of the month still showed some activity, but waned a little by the end of the month. The main groups were AR3140 and AR3141 which transited the disc on the 8th and continued to develop until reaching the west limb on the 14th when it was seen that AR3140 had grown into a large complex group. These groups reached the limb on the 16th. Minor groups remained visible until the end of the month. Overall activity was low. Most of the images sent in are on the News part of the website but some are repeated here.

1 November 22. AR3131 maintains its dominant role as a large singular sunspot now in the western hemisphere. AR3135 has appeared to decay slightly but maintains a bipolar group attitude. New group AR3136 has appeared as a small faint bipolar spot/pore group. A new spot has appeared over the north-east limb (arrowed)

2 November 22. AR3131 remains stable as a large singular spot. AR3135 appears stable. Group AR3136 has developed very slightly and become more prominent. Single spot AR3137 has now cleared the limb and is followed by a large amount of faculae.

3 November 22. Activity low. AR3131 remains a singular spot (possible double umbra?) whilst AR3135 remains a bipolar group. AR3137 appears to have decayed slightly as well as AR3136. Bright faculae to north-west of AR3137. Hydrogen Alpha observation by Ian Lee shows fair activity across the disc, notably the large prominence on the north-east.

4 November 22. Activity higher. Northern AAs dominate. AR3131 has now reached the west limb. AR3135 has developed slightly still shows a following pore. AR3137 has developed and is now more prominent. New area AR3139 is a small pore, and two spots are just coming over the east limb. The larger one appears to be showing the ‘Wilson Effect’. Highly detailed Hydrogen alpha observations by Carl Bowron show large prominence and filament activity.

8 November 22.  Activity still relatively higher. AR3140 is a singular spot, below is AR3141, a large bipolar group in which the leader spot contains multiple umbrae. AR3142 is a faint pore group. AR3137 is a pore. AR3135 has reached the west limb with minor faculae. AR3143 is a faint pore to the south-east. There is an unmarked pore to the central meridian.

9 November 22. Activity now quite low. Most AAs are small faint pore groups, but still dominating the scene is AR3140 and AR3141. AR3140 is a large singular spot with a large umbra, whilst AR3141 is a bipolar group with large leader and follower spot, both containing multiple umbrae. AR3137 is a pore. AR3142 is a double pore group. AR3143 is a very faint (possibly decaying) pore in the south-east. Cliff Meredith shows the situation in white light very well, and Carl Bowron’s hydrogen alpha image show some splendid prominences.

10 November 22. Activity still low but AR3140 and AR3141 still very apparent as they transit the central meridian.

13 November 22. Activity slightly higher with the development of AR3140. AR3141 remained stable. New group to the east transiting the disc and some slight faculae to the east. Ian Lee’s drawing shows prominence activity and a large filament to the south-central meridian.

14 November 22. Activity still low. AR3140 and AR1341 now reaching the west limb. AR1340 is the biggest group with 5 major spot umbra and little followers. AR1341 is a small group with a multi-umbra leader, double spot middle and spot/pore followers. AR3146 is a bipolar group to the north-east.

16 November 22. Activity Low. AR3140 and AR3141 are going over the west limb, but still appear quite stable. New AR3145 follows them. All areas are surrounded by a mass of faculae. AR3146 is a singular spot on the central meridian. A new spot has appeared over the east limb (arrowed) along with a pore further south.

19 November 22. Sun showing several small spot pore groups, but the main area is AR3147 sporting a large spot leader with possible double umbra and following spot. AR3149 and 3148 are small spot/pore groups. AR3150 (a possible new area) is a small bipolar group which is now reaching the west limb.

20 November 22. AR 3150 is nearing the west limb. AR3147 still the largest group is one main spot with following pore. AR3149 and AR3148 are both small pore groups. Activity relatively low.

23 November 22. AR3149 has developed over the previous days and is now a bipolar group with a small spot leader and double spot follower. AR3148 appears to have decayed. AR3147 is still the largest group and seems to have remained relatively stable. There is a mass of faculae to the north-east. Activity still low.

24 November 22. AR3149 appears to have decayed slightly. AR3147 remains stable as is AR3151. New bipolar group emerging in NE (faint pores and faculae (arrowed)).

25 November 22. New AR3152 has developed slightly from the previous day. It is now a faint bipolar pore group. AR3149 appears to have decayed slightly and AR3147 and AR3151 remaining stable as they continue to transit the disc. Ian Lee’s observation in hydrogen alpha shows strong activity, as does Carl Bowron’s images of prominences and full disc view in H-alpha light.

28 November 22. AR3147 and AR3149 have now reached the west limb. Activity remains low.
