After a busy September, the month of October brought fewer fireball reports.<\/p>\n

Below is a \u00a0summary of fireball reports from the UK received during October and a couple of images.<\/p>\n

Colin Towe<\/strong>\u00a0(Houghton on the Hill, Leics) reported a fireball seen at\u00a022:12 BST<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Oct 7<\/strong>, travelling from near the Pisces\/Aries\/Cetus border to Perseus.<\/p>\n

Peter Mayhew<\/strong>\u00a0(Bishopthorpe, N Yorks) reported a\u00a0mag -3<\/strong>\u00a0fireball seen at\u00a021:26 BST<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Oct 9<\/strong>, travelling from near the Hyades in Taurus to Cetus. He described it as\u00a0having a colour of “Orange, fading to blue” and having a “lovely colourful train that was very long” of 3 sec duration.<\/div>\n
There were also two other on-line reports from Norfolk of a fireball at approx the same time. Both reported it as being in the north eastern part of their sky,\u00a0with one commenting that it was heading south. One observer described it as an “Orange Ball”, the other as “Orange, leaving a trail of yellow light”. Both also\u00a0quote a duration of 2-3 secs.<\/div>\n

A fireball at approx\u00a022:28 on Oct 10<\/strong>\u00a0was reported by\u00a0Dan Haines<\/strong>\u00a0(Westcliff on Sea, Essex) and by\u00a0Stuart Capel & David Trelfer<\/strong>\u00a0(Whitfield, near Dover, Kent).<\/p>\n

Dan’s report was “I was looking south over the river Thames towards Kent and a fireball came into my view travelling West. It’s trajectory was slightly pointing\u00a0downwards and after a couple of seconds it broke into two, then a third small piece and then it just fizzled out”<\/p>\n

Stuart and David estimated its\u00a0magnitude as -3\/-4<\/strong>, describe its colour as “Yellow with bluish tinge at edges” and report it leaving a long train of 1 sec duration.<\/p>\n

Three other reports of this fireball were found on-line. A Sussex observer described it as “heading North West 30 degrees under the constellation of Hercules … and breaking up”,\u00a0a London observer described it as “Orange\/Yellow with a tail flame”, whilst a Norfolk observer described it as a “Ball of Red\/Orange fire with a flame tail”.<\/p>\n

Two fireball reports were received from\u00a0Oct 29<\/strong>. Tony Jones (Pwllheli, Gwynedd) reported a\u00a0mag -4<\/strong>\u00a0yellow-orange fireball seen at\u00a019:15 GMT<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Neil Graham<\/strong>\u00a0(Lealholm, N Yorks) reported a pale green\u00a0mag -5\u00a0<\/strong>fireball seen at\u00a022:43 GMT<\/strong>. The latter was described as having a large central core, being of duration 3-4 secs\u00a0and travelling from south to north.<\/p>\n

Although none were witnessed directly,\u00a0Alex Pratt<\/strong>\u00a0(Leeds) did capture several bright meteors and fireballs during October using his video system. The best two\u00a0images, showing a\u00a0mag -4 sporadic<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a003:57:13 GMT on Oct 7<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0mag -2 Orionid<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a005:12:17 GMT on Oct 21<\/strong>\u00a0are reproduced below:<\/p>\n
