{"id":2971,"date":"2017-11-24T11:29:29","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T11:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/main_spa1\/meteor\/?page_id=2971"},"modified":"2020-01-11T21:17:11","modified_gmt":"2020-01-11T21:17:11","slug":"fireball-reports-from-2012-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/2017\/11\/24\/fireball-reports-from-2012-november\/","title":{"rendered":"Fireball Reports from 2012 November"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>November was a fairly quiet month for fireball reports &#8211; I suspect that many observers are wary of submitting reports during the first week of November due to the risk of\u00a0mis-identifying fireworks.<\/p>\n<div>Below is a summary of UK fireballs reported during November :<\/div>\n<p><strong>Graham Holyfield<\/strong>\u00a0(Fryup, N Yorks) reported a\u00a0<strong>very bright white fireball<\/strong>\u00a0with a &#8220;<em>very limited tail<\/em>&#8221; at\u00a0<strong>23:30 GMT on Nov 8<\/strong>. This was seen heading down to the\u00a0horizon in his north western sky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Pratt (Leeds)\u00a0<\/strong>captured a number of fireballs during the month using his video system. The most impressive was a\u00a0<strong>mag -7 northern Taurid\u00a0<\/strong>fireball, recorded at\u00a0<strong>23:54:20 GMT on Nov 8<\/strong>. The negative of the image is shown below :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/meteor\/M20121108_235420_neg_70c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"300\" border=\"5\" hspace=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>mag -5<\/strong>\u00a0fireball was seen at approx\u00a0<strong>19:24 GMT on Nov 10<\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Graham Gilbert<\/strong>\u00a0(near Edinburgh) and by\u00a0<strong>Jacqueline Sinclair<\/strong>\u00a0(Burntisland, Fife). Both reported it to be\u00a0heading in a rough north to south direction (from the\u00a0<em>just north of the Pleiades to Cassiopeia<\/em>\u00a0in the case of Graham) and having a duration of several seconds.\u00a0Graham also noted that it broke into 2 distinct equal size pieces, each lasting about 1 second<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jacqueline<\/strong>\u00a0also reported a fireball from\u00a0<strong>2-3 mins before the above one<\/strong>. This was similar in appearance and also had a &#8220;<em>huge sparkly tail<\/em>&#8221; but was travelling in a\u00a0more west to east direction<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Scanlan<\/strong>\u00a0(North Baddesley, Hampshire), reported a\u00a0<strong>mag -5<\/strong>\u00a0fireball seen at\u00a0<strong>18:02 GMT on Nov 29<\/strong>. This was heading from Cassiopeia towards Auriga. He describes\u00a0it as having &#8220;<em>a bright golden, orange colouring to it. No signs of fragmenting or breaking up. Medium speed with approximately 3-4 second train. Simply faded out<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another on-line report has been found which might possibly be of the same object. This was from an observer in Dublin who saw a bright fireball in the eastern sky\u00a0at approx 18:10 GMT.<\/p>\n<p>David&#8217;s &#8220;sketch&#8221; showing the direction of the fireball is shown below :<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/meteor\/fireball_2012nov29_DScanlan_path.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"300\" border=\"5\" hspace=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Any\u00a0<strong>further sightings<\/strong>\u00a0of these or different fireballs (meteors of magnitude -3 and brighter) would be welcomed by the Meteor Section.<\/p>\n<p>Advice on what to record and where to report to \u00a0can be found at : \u00a0<a href=\"\/meteor\/fireballs\/makingobservations\/index.php\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.popastro.com\/meteor\/fireballs\/makingobservations\/index.php<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November was a fairly quiet month for fireball reports &#8211; I suspect that many observers are wary of submitting reports during the first week of November due to the risk of\u00a0mis-identifying fireworks.
