Cloudy weather put paid to plans for Quadrantid observations from the UK and to the chances of seeing many fireballs during the rest of the month.<\/p>\n

However, four UK fireballs were reported to the section, with two being reported by multiple observers :<\/p>\n

Dominic Sleath<\/strong>\u00a0(Sheffield),\u00a0Jonathan Cooper<\/strong>\u00a0(Shap, Cumbria) and\u00a0Nigel Sutherland<\/strong>\u00a0(Rothesay, Argyll&Buye), reported a bright fireball of around mag -8 which \u00a0appeared at approx\u00a023:55 GMT<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Jan 8<\/strong>\u00a0(this was the first night of this year’s Stargazing Live, but the fireball probably appeared too late in the night for observers who had gone outside after the TV programme ended at 21:30). The fireball was reported to be heading in a NNW direction and was described as being orange or yellow in colour and including several brightness flares.<\/p>\n

Peter Grego<\/strong>\u00a0(St Dennis, Cornwall) reported a slow moving fireball seen at\u00a005:00 GMT<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Jan 10<\/strong>. Peter’s sketch of the fireball is shown below :<\/p>\n

Christian Hollingbery<\/strong>\u00a0(Marlborough, Wiltshire) reported a mag -4 fireball at approx\u00a018:20 GMT<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Jan 11<\/strong>. This was described as being yellow-white in colour.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the month was a fireball that appeared at approx\u00a021:04 GMT<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Jan 30<\/strong>\u00a0and was reported by\u00a0Jane Needham<\/strong>\u00a0(Nottingham),\u00a0Brian Joynes<\/strong>\u00a0(Doncaster),\u00a0Julia Harrison<\/strong>\u00a0(Eagle, Lincs),\u00a0Pamela Foster<\/strong>\u00a0(Pitlochry, Perthshire) and\u00a0John Bennett<\/strong>\u00a0(Wellesbourne, Warks). The fireball was heading in a roughly East to West Direction and was most frequently described as being green in colour, although orange and blue were also mentioned by some observers. Any further sightings of these or different fireballs (meteors of magnitude -3 and brighter) would be welcomed by the Meteor Section.<\/p>\n
