Skies continued to be mostly cloudy on later nights. The short meteor trail can be seen between these two stars, above the bright star Procyon.<\/p>\n<p>Paul comments that it wasn&#8217;t immediately obvious whether the meteor was an Orionid or a Taurid as it lines up with the radiants of both showers.<\/p>\n<p>A more certain identification would require an indication of the speed of the meteor &#8211; Orionids are somewhat faster than Taurids &#8211; but although this would be clearer to a visual observer, the information is unfortunately not readily available from DSLR imaging.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF4981.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF4981.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF4981-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF4981-768x435.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second image shows an Orionid meteor below Leo, captured at 03:41 UT during the night of Oct 21-22.<\/p>\n<p>Images were also captured of a number of fainter meteors.<\/p>\n<p>All of Paul&#8217;s images (587 in total during the night of Oct 21-22, and more images the following night)\u00a0 were captured via 20 second exposures at ISO 1600, with a 50mm lens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3000\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3000\" style=\"width: 828px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF5561_fullres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF5561_fullres.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF5561_fullres-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/orionid_crop_DSCF5561_fullres-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Orionid meteor captured at 00.03 UT on 23 October, 2017, by Paul Sutherland from Walmer, Kent. (the breaks in the image are an artefact of the imaging and processing rather than a property of the meteor).<\/p>\n<p>He also captured a faint spectrum of it and recorded a radio echo at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>William then contacted other members of the NEMETODE group (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nemetode.org\/index.html\">http:\/\/nemetode.org\/index.html<\/a>\u00a0 ) to ask whether any of them had also imaged this fireball.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/FB2017oct21_040941GMAP_cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"884\" height=\"765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/FB2017oct21_040941GMAP_cr.jpg 884w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/FB2017oct21_040941GMAP_cr-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/meteor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2017\/11\/FB2017oct21_040941GMAP_cr-768x665.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 884px) 100vw, 884px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In response, two additional images of the fireball were reported to William. One was captured by Jon Jones (Huntington, Cheshire) ; the other was by David Anderson (Dunure, Ayrshire)<\/p>\n<p>Based on the sky track recorded from each location, the ground track of its atmospheric trajectory was determined to be over the southern Pennines, as is shown in the accompanying map.<\/p>\n<p>No visual reports of the fireball have come to light &#8211; presumably a consequence of the time of night at which it appeared.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The weather proved unfavourable for the maximum nights of the 2017 Orionids.\u00a0 Storm Brian brought cloud, rain and gales across the southern UK during the nights of Oct 20-21 and Oct 21-22.
