Section Director: Matthew Barrett
Hello fellow variable star observers! As the new section director I’d just thought that I should introduce myself. I’ve been a member of the SPA since it was the Junior Astronomical Society and I’ve been observing variable stars on and off now since 1990. I first took an interest in variable stars after reading ‘Observing Variable Stars’ by David Levy. I still observe with only the naked eye and binoculars – one of the joys of variable star observing is that it doesn’t require complex or expensive equipment. Hopefully, this website will not only keep you up to date on what changes are taking place in the sky, but also will encourage you to start observing variable stars. Variable star observing is not only fun and challenging, but it allows even the beginner to make scientifically useful observations.
