I can understand that some sort of dreadful reality TV 'Big Brother In Space', following the trials and tribulations of would-be astronauts in training, might appeal to the viewing masses. But could an actual private venture mission to Mars ever become a reality?
History shows us that exploration has always been driven by political and/or economic ambitions and is government instigated and led. Then private enterprise can follow where suitable opportunities arise.
Branson and Rutan's SpaceShipTwo will be capable of giving weightless joy-rides in a near-space environment but will not even achieve orbit. Getting into orbit is a much greater challenge, let alone going beyond orbit to the Moon or even Mars.
Mars One seems to be taking itself seriously but can it ever really get a crew of would-be astronauts to Mars, who are then willing to maroon themselves there for good? Can't see it happening folks.
Best Wishes,
Geoff
