National star-count completed ..

Post by brian livesey »

The countryside charity CPRE has completed its survey with over 8000 results. The star count has revealed a ten percentage drop in people experiencing severe light pollution since February. The CPRE attributes this reduction probably to the Covid lockdown.
The number of stars counted in Orion between 6-14 February by 51 per cent of observers was less than 10, indicating severe light pollution in their location compared to 61 per cent of observers in February 2020. As we skywatchers know, the pollution problem isn’t going to go away. Any amelioration of light pollution will tend to be far less than is required to give us back the night.
