The ESA comet chaser

Post by brian livesey »

The European Space Agency has given the go-ahead for the construction of a new spacecraft dubbed "the comet chaser", planned to launch in 2028. The aim of the project is to approach comets and map them in 3D for the first time.
The spacecraft will have two robotic probes onboard to map a still unidentified comet, probably from the Oort Cloud. This is a cloud of ice and comets at a great distance from the Sun that encircles the Solar System.
The comet chaser is the first of the ESA's "fast missions", with the weight of each one restricted to less than 1,000kg. The spacecraft will be constructed by aerospace company Thales Alenia.
