SPA Space Suit on Facebook

Post by JohnM »

Hello eveyone

To support tonight's broadcast there is a PHD thesis on the history of space suits at http://tuprints.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de/210 ... n_diss.pdf

One thing to remember the first 'space suits' were designed for pilots in very high altitude aircraft and balloons. Pilots in U2 / SR71 and similar high altitude aircraft still wear them.

From what I remember the problem with all the early space suits is that when inflated it was almost impossible to move. One of the things that the USA suit designers looked at was how the joints in Armour were made. The challenge is to keep the volume the same as the angles change. If you can achieve this you get over the problem of the inflation stopping you moving. The gloves were and still are a particular problem.

I wonder how easy it is to move in the Space-X suits ?

Have a look at this paper as well https://www.aerosociety.com/media/4847/ ... othing.pdf which covers some of the UK developments in high altitude RAF suits.
