New date set for Webb Space Telescope launch

Post by brian livesey »

The launch of the groundbreaking infrared telescope was scheduled for next March, but this has been extended to October 2021. Webb was meant to be launched a decade ago. In 2018, there was a further delay due to worker error and hardware problems. Despite the long delay, the $8.8 awarded by Congree for instrument development will not be exceeded according to NASA associate administrator, Steve Jurckzyk. The present delay is due to the Corvid pandemic and team safety considerations at main contractor, Northrop Grumman in
Southern California.
Next month, a crucial acoustic and vibration test for the fully assembled telescope is planned and its huge integral sunshield will be opened and refolded. It's expected that the Webb will see deeper and further back in time than any other space telescope.
