How not to point a telescope

Anyone else who saw the stargazing article in the "i" today ( p.30-31 ) might have noticed that the person with the small Newtonian telescope was looking through it with the 'scope pointing downwards!
It goes to show that we shouldn't believe everything we see in the newspapers

I thought you were going to mention the European Southern Observatory pointing their New Technology Telescope at the Sun during the Solar Eclipse ! A quick calculation shows that with a 3.5m telescope like the NTT the power concentrated into the detector would have been around 10kW if they had not moved it away from the Sun quickly after totality.
The telescope technicians controlling the telescope were complaining about light pollution before and after the event in Chile, they had to operate the telescope from inside the dome to reduce the risk of not moving the telescope at the right time and they could not see their laptop screen in the bright sunshine.
The good news is they did not destroy the telescope or the detector. The only telescope they could use was the NTT - none of the ESO telescopes were able to point that low.
