ISS leaking from old age ..

Post by brian livesey »

In 2019 an air leak was discovered in the International Space Station ( ISS ). Attempts to fix the leak have not been fully successful. Last year, technicians identified why cabin pressure had been affected. Other cracks where discovered in 2020 using an electron microscope and sealed, but there are more cracks in the Space Station, launched 22 years ago.
According to the Russian media, three more cracks were sealed last week. Cosmonauts had used tea leaves to find if air was leaking in the area near to the rear docking port. Both NASA and Roscosmos have said that there is no risk to the crew onboard.
It’s thought that the cracks may have be caused by stress when space vehicles have docked with the station.
Over the two decades of being in orbit, the station has required frequent repairs. The first leaks were discovered in 2004 and 2005. The Electron oxygen generator has malfunctioned many times, forcing the crew to use back-up oxygen. In 2011, a piece of space debris passed within a kilometre of the ISS, so the crew boarded an attached vessel in case there was a danger of collision.

Experts believe that the leak does not pose a danger to the ISS crew, but a representative of Roscosmos has already stated that if the problem is not resolved within a certain time, air will have to be sent to the station. It is time to get the station retired.

They could replace modules at the station with new ones. Originally, the ISS was intended to be considerably bigger, but mounting costs set a limit to its eventual size.
