British COLKa installed in ISS

Post by brian livesey »

Britain has made its first industrial contribution to the International Space Station with COLKa ( Columbus K-band Terminal ). Until the installation of COLKa into the ESA’s Columbus module on the ISS, results from scientific experiments had to be returned to Earth on a hard drive, which can take months to arrive and with some information sometimes being lost in transit.
COLKA will revolutionise data collection by allowing scientists to receive research data in just a few days at home broadband speeds. They will also be able to make rapid adjustments to experiments if the data shows problems, such as unclear images.
