2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This reporting period began with Michael Kinns sending in two drawings of observations he made using his 200mm f6 Newtonian telescope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2566\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2566\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2566\" id=\"caption-attachment-2566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NGC 7142<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NGC 7142, and\u00a0 NGC 7510 are both open clusters in the constellation of Cepheus.\u00a0 Michael used a magnification of 67x for NGC 7142, which is near to the reflection nebula NGC 7129; studies have shown that the light from the stars in this cluster is reddened, indicating that interstellar matter is partly obscuring it.\u00a0 Michael noted that &#8220;only a few 12th magnitude stars could be resolved among a nebulous background of 13th magnitude stars extending to ~ 9&#8242; in an approximate circle&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2567\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.11.19-NGC7510-M.Kinns_-300x300.jpg\" id=\"caption-attachment-2567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NGC 7510<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0 NGC 7510 was observed at 150x, and the light from this cluster has also undergone extinction from interstellar gas and dust.\u00a0 This cluster is in the Perseus spral arm.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Dale Holt sent in drawings of 5 galaxies this month<\/strong>, all observed with a 505mm Newtonian telescope and a Watec120Ncooled video camera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0Here are sketches of NGC 1 and NGC 2, in the constellation years from the Earth.\u00a0 NGC 2, also a spiral, is fainter still at magnitude 15, and is considerably further away at around 316 million light years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2570\" id=\"caption-attachment-2572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NGC3432 or Arp 206<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Dale&#8217;s final sketch this month is NGC 3432, number 206 in the Arp catalogue of so called peculiar galaxies, by Halton Arp, published in 1966. Magnitude 11.7 NGC 3432 is interacting with smaller galaxy UGC 5983, shown in the sketch at<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">the upper right, which is much fainter at magnitude 17.0.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Mike Wood made three observations this month<\/strong>,\u00a0 using a Takahshi 180mm Mewlon telecope (Dall &#8211; Kirkham design).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2573\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2573\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.11-NGC-2683-M.Wood-resized-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.11-NGC-2683-M.Wood-resized-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.11-NGC-2683-M.Wood-resized.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2573\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NGC 2683<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This drawing is of almost edge &#8211; on spiral galaxy NGC 2683, which can be found in the constellation of Lynx.\u00a0 At magnitude 10.6, this galaxy is about 25 million light years from he Earth, and has an angular size of 9.3&#8242; x 2.2&#8242;.\u00a0 Magnification used was 73x.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Mike&#8217;s second drawing is the multple star 14 Aurigae, a 5th magnitude star with 3 companions of magnitudes\u00a0 8.0, 10.4 and 11.0\u00a0\u00a0 The three brightest stars are of spectral type A9, A2 and B respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The third drawing is a double star designated BU 536 which is in the open cluster M45, perhaps better known as the Pleiades. smaller telescope;\u00a0 a Williams Optics 66mm refractor fitted with a 0.8 focal reducer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">NGC 7000 is also known as the North America Nebula, an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Here is an image of the Bubble nebula area, also an HII emision region, NGC 7635, in Cassiopeia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2583\" all taken using a 100mm f 9 Skywatcher refractor and a SXR-H9c colour camera.\u00a0 The first\u00a0 are galaxies in the constellation of Ursa Major.\u00a0 M81 is also known as Bode&#8217;s galaxy and is relatively large (26.9&#8242; x 14.1&#8242;) and bright (magnitude 6.9).\u00a0 M108 appears considerably smaller (8.7&#8242; x 2.2&#8242;),\u00a0 and at about 46 million light years is about 4 2024.\u00a0 Close to Alnitak in Orion&#8217;s belt, fierce UV radiation is ionising hydrogen gas.\u00a0 Cold gas and dust between us and the emission nebula gives rise to the dark lanes that appear to be at the centre.\u00a0\u00a0 The brighter of the two images was binned 2 x 2.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2587\" style=\"width: 300px\" galaxy in the constellation of Andromeda.
