planetary nebula in Sagittarius, same telescope and camera as above but at f10, combining images taken through red green and blue filters with an IR filtered image to make a final LRGB image.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2518\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2518 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-NGC6818-DF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-NGC6818-DF.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-NGC6818-DF-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NGC 6712<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NGC 6818 is magnitude 9.9 with a high surface brightness, and is 48 arcseconds in diameter.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On 25th July I imaged the two bright globular clusters in Hercules, M13 and M92.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2520\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07.-M13-2014-DF-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07.-M13-2014-DF-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07.-M13-2014-DF.jpg 404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">M13<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2521\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-M92-DF-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-M92-DF-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-M92-DF-768x592.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/2014.07-M92-DF.jpg 936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">M92<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Well &#8211; known M13 is 140 light years across and 21,000 light years from Earth, whereas M92 is both smaller and more distant, at 80 light years and 25,000 light years.\u00a0 M92 is considered to be one of our Galaxy&#8217;s oldest globulars &#8211; it&#8217;s stars have a very low metallicity.<\/p>\n<p>Also on 25th July I took a further two images;\u00a0 both in the constellation of Lyra.\u00a0 The ring nebula, M57, is a planetary nebula often imaged by amateur astronomers, and this was taken at f10 with same procedure employed on NGC 6818 above.\u00a0 M56, a globular cluster, was also taken at f10.\u00a0 but luminance frames only.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2522\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M57_LRGB-neb-psp-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M57_LRGB-neb-psp-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M57_LRGB-neb-psp.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">M57<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2523\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M56_L0001-ddp-neb-psp-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M56_L0001-ddp-neb-psp-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.popastro.com\/deepsky\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/01\/M56_L0001-ddp-neb-psp.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">M56<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>M57 is 1.5 x 1.0 arcminutes across, and the central white dwarf star is magnitude 15.3.\u00a0 This planetary nebula is 2,300 light years away, and is thought to be about 6,000 years old.\u00a0 Its measured expansion rate is 1 arcsecond per 100 years.\u00a0 The blue green tinge caused by doubly ionised oxygen responds well to an OIII filter.<\/p>\n<p>At about 33,000 light years from earth, 84 light years across and magnitude 8.3, M56 is visually less impressive than either M13 or M92.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Dave Finnigan<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, I have only my own observations to report!\u00a0 On 21st July I imaged globular clusters M22 in Sagittarius and NGC6712 in Scutum. &nbsp;
