WHITE LIGHT
 
     Much cloudy weather again hampered observers through the month , some only able to make any on a handful or less occasions , in the North John Docherty not at all.
    NH AR1140 was in view for the first few days , a fine umbra with a similar surrounding penumbra , with small SH AR’s 1142,1144 and NH AR 1145 following at a distance. NH AR 1147, another good sized AR came into view at the E limb on the 16th, it’s large leader showing the   “ Wilson Effect “ well . By the 18th it showed as a string of small sunspots behind the leader which Lee Macdonald reported as having split into three pieces.  Another small NH AR1150 was observed and photographed on the 30th by Ron Westmaas . Traces of limb faculae were occasionally seen by Lee and Alan Heath where AR’s had been .

H-ALPHA
 
 A selection of small prominences were seen through the month , but on the 18th. a tall, finely shaped one spread northwards along the SW limb, on the 27th. a tall complex arch stood out there. Alan Clitherow observed and photographed on the 26th. a large NE limb prominence that flowed as a filament onto the disc. Alan Heath reported flare activity on the 9th., and on the 22nd. a prominence and filament with one by AR1147.Peter Paice saw and photographed flaring there the previous day. Plaging was seen to the larger AR’s.

Peter Paice provided fine montages, Alan Clitherow, Brian Woosnam and Ron Westmaas further splendid pictures , Paul Brierley detailed drawings and Ian Lee drawings and notes to his usual high standard .
 
PARTIAL ECLIPSE
 
       A few observers were fortunate with their sky conditions to catch glimpses of the partial solar eclipse on the 4th. January. Lee in Cambridge had a superb view at sunrise as the sky cleared after overnight cloud. It appeared as a magnificent crescent. David Bryant Andrew Robertson and Ray Hutton also had good views and took  fine photographs .
