This instrument has two uses and was inspired by similar devices made during the 17th and 18th
centuries. On one side is a lunar calendar giving the Moon's phase and age for any day of the
year. On the reverse is an instrument for determining the times of high and low tide by using
the relationship between the Moon's age and solar time.

Perpetual Calendar

Since the invention of the calendar by the Babylonians nearly nine millennia ago, many other
versions have both come in to use and been abandoned (there are still about 40 different
calendars in use today). The calendar we use today was introduced during Pope Gregory XIII's
reign in 1582. A Perpetual Calendar is designed to allow the calculation of dates and
weekdays; this calendar starts at 1st January 1600 and ends at 31st December 2799.
Solid brass, 90mm diameter, with wooden stand and presentation box.

Nocturnal Keyring
|

|
The Nocturnal is an instrument developed in the 16th century for determining time at night. It uses
the Pole Star (Polaris) and either the ‘pointers’ of Ursa Major or the ‘guards’ of Ursa Minor. A
hand held instrument, it was often made of wood and was widely used on board ships. It was only
with the development of accurate mechanical clocks after about two hundred years that the Nocturnal
became less important.
This is a replica of an instrument dated 1570 and signed by Humphrey Cole, the original of which
can be seen in the British Museum.
Solid brass, 50mm diameter, length with keyring - 110mm, with presentation box.

Astrolabe Keyring
|

|
The Astrolabe is an historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers.
It was the chief navigational instrument until the invention of the compass and sextant. Its
many uses included locating and predicting positions of the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars,
determining local time and longitude, surveying and triangulation. Even today the
Astrolabe clearly demonstrates the celestial mechanism and apparent movement of the stars.
Solid brass, 45mm diameter, length with keyring - 125mm, with presentation box.

Pocket Universal Ring Sun Dial
|

|
Made of solid brass and a delight to handle and use, this is a truly scientific instrument that has
parentage dating way back to the early measuring devices of the Greek and Roman Empires.
It has latitude rings with important cities indicated and monthly engravings. The instrument can also
be used as a model of the earth and as a compass that converts for either hemisphere.
With dimensions of 61mm diameter and 6mm thick, it folds flat when not in use and can sit in the palm
of your hand to tell you the time of day - becomes a terrific talking point when you produce it with
a flourish when asked for the time! Comes complete with presentation box.
