Followers of Alastair's monthly meteor activity update, for December 2009, will have read the following regarding the Ursids.
| Alastair McBeath wrote: | | Ursid activity usually runs from December 17-26, but is typically low to undetectable early and late in this spell. New IMO video data has confirmed this, and suggested it may actually end a little sooner, around December 23 or 24. The shower's radiant at maximum is near Kochab, the brighter of the two "Guard" stars in Ursa Minor, at 14h28m RA, +76° Dec, so is consequently circumpolar from the UK, though highest towards dawn. The shower has been greatly under-observed, thanks to its proximity to the festive season, and frequently unhelpful winter weather. This year, the peak is scheduled to fall in British afternoon daylight, between 13h30m-16h UT on December 22. However, there may be another peak earlier that day, around 07h14m UT. Maximum ZHRs can be between 10-50 or so (they were ~30 for a time in 2000, and 2006 to 2008 recently), though only at very rare previous returns had the activity exceeded ~10-15. The ZHR prediction for the 07h14m timing is ~14, perhaps similar to what is likely to happen at the afternoon peak time... |
The attached images show my radio meteor results for the 2009 Ursids. The first chart shows the counts relative to three threshold levels and the second chart shows the total echo duration against the same three threshold levels.

Thanks David. I've seen scarcely any Ursid results from last year at all as yet, the first time in quite a few years this has been so. If anyone has any more they'd like to share, they'd be most welcome!
