| | How to apply There
are up to 1000 telescopes available to secondary schools. They are
70 mm refractors and come with a tripod and several
eyepieces. The funding for the telescopes comes from the
Science
and Technology Facilities Council. To help teachers
take full advantage of the telescope, the SPA will provide
a DVD (funded by the Royal
Astronomical Society)
showing
how to set up the telescope, use a starchart, draw the Moon and make
other observations. There
are also interviews, possible projects, and much more. In addition,
there will be support for the use of the telescope on this website.
There
will also be a competition for young people, to help them to show what
they saw
through the telescope, what is what like to use it, or what ideas
it inspired.
Instructions
for schools To
apply for a telescope, a teacher needs to:
- Download the application
form (doc format
/ PDF format) and
the Memorandum
of Gift (doc format
/ PDF format)
- Read the notes which
will help you to apply. Also read the safety information
- Find (if possible) a local astronomer to help you
- Spell
out in less than 500 words what your school class(es) will
do with the telescope, how this will help with the curriculum
and how this will help your students enjoy astronomy/science
more
- Fill in and send the form, Memorandum of Gift and
information
to SPA IYA2009, 36
Fairway, Keyworth, Nottingham NG12 5DU.
The
telescopes will be sent out as fast as we can manage, hopefully around the middle to end of February.
If you have questions regarding your
application, please email them to iya2009@popastro.com. Updates on availability of the instruments will appear on these pages so please check here before emailing.
