Can you help us?

A special message to professional astronomers and students

The Society for Popular Astronomy has been around for 60 years! We were founded in 1953 by leading amateurs including Sir Patrick Moore.

Today our role is still to help beginners learn about the Universe and to promote astronomy among the public.

As a professional astronomer or student of science, you probably won't need our help yourself. But you could surely help us to put astronomy out there in the general consciousness.

With public outreach being such an important part of science nowadays, supporting our aims can help you to reach a wider community.

You can help us in several ways:

1. Join the SPA! It's one of the best-value astronomical societies around.

2. Join and get involved. We can help you get valuable exposure and experience in communication. You could provide an article or news item for our magazine Popular Astronomy, for example.

3. Develop media skills. We have experienced journalists in our team who can give expert feedback if you are considering a career in media or public outreach. It looks great on your CV too–several members have gone on to jobs in newspapers, magazines or broadcasting, and one graduate who was recently Chief Stargazer to our younger members is now part of ESA's media team!
